Started Dogs

What is a started dog?

A started bird dog refers to a dog that has begun formal hunting or field training but is not yet fully finished or fully trained for hunting work. Essentially, it’s a dog that has been introduced to the basics of hunting and has received some initial training to develop natural hunting instincts.

Key characteristics of a “started” bird dog:

  • Introduction to game: The dog has been exposed to birds or game in a controlled setting.

  • Basic field skills: It may know how to hunt in a straight line, point, or retrieve on command, but skills are not fully refined.

  • Training foundation: The dog understands basic commands and is responsive in the field but requires continued guidance and experience.
