Understanding the health of a Westrock puppy requires an understanding of the overall health profile of German Shorthaired Pointers (GSP) and the breed’s potential health risks. To minimize the likelihood of unforeseen health issues, we carefully select breeding dogs that have successfully passed extensive health screenings. Our ethical selection practices not only reduce health risks in our puppies but also contribute to the ongoing improvement of the breed. While these measures significantly lower the chance of a puppy developing a medical or genetic condition, no breeder can provide a 100% guarantee.
In addition to health testing, our potential breeding dogs participate in hunt testing to ensure they possess the natural abilities necessary to excel as versatile hunting dogs. Please read below for more information on our breeding and selection process.

Genetics and bloodlines play a critical role in the health, temperament, and abilities of a puppy. Each parent contributes equally to a puppy’s genetic makeup, and the traits of grandparents are also inherited and must be carefully considered. Every puppy receives a unique combination of genes, which is why littermates can differ significantly from one another. At Westrock Kennels, we breed dogs from reputable bloodlines, carefully evaluating both parents and grandparents for natural ability, versatility, drive, work ethic, confidence, intelligence, companionship, and temperament. Our selection process focuses on pairing dogs with compatible characteristics, ensuring consistency, reliability, and optimal outcomes in each litter.

While German Shorthaired Pointers are generally a healthy breed, they can be prone to certain conditions. According to the American Kennel Club, these include hip dysplasia, eye conditions such as progressive retinal atrophy, and certain heart diseases. Ethical breeding practices are essential to help minimize the risk of these conditions being passed on to offspring.

We adhere to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) recommended testing protocol for German Shorthaired Pointers, which includes screening for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cone degeneration, cardiac conditions, and eye health. Successfully passing these health evaluations ensures that our breeding program remains ethical and focused on the long-term improvement of the breed. For more information on these tests, please visit the official OFA website linked below.

German Shorthaired Pointers were originally bred to be powerful, versatile hunting dogs. To support the ongoing improvement of the breed, our potential breeding dogs undergo evaluation through the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) testing system. This ensures they possess the natural instincts and abilities required to excel as exceptional hunting dogs. For more information on the NAVHDA testing system, please visit the official NAVHDA website linked below.
